IEEE1394, USB, cables and connectors

  • iLink (IEEE1394) - the controller and the cable are not supplied with the camcorder. I recommend that you buy the Pinnacle Studio DV containing the IEEE1394 controller and software for video processing. After you connect the controller, you do not need to install any other additional SW or drivers. For transferring and for controlling the camcorder, you can use the PIXELA ImageMixer or the Windows Movie Maker which you will find in WindowsXP. But DV Studio provides much comfort and many features, or you can look for some similar specialized SW.

  • USB - the USB cable is supplied with the camcorder. There are many advantages and disadvantages here. The transfer speed and the fact that you cannot control the camcorder will not please you. In order to transfer recordings to your PC through USB, you have to control everything by using buttons on the camcorder. Shooting in full DV is not possible here. You can encounter problems in case you want to install the Sony USB driver into the system and activate the USB function in the menu on the camcorder. The function is implicitly disabled and so many people can spend much time trying to find out why the USB does not work. The problem is not in the computer, but in the setup. The cable is fully convenient for transferring pictures from the memory card - after connecting to computer the card appears as another storage disk and you can work with it similarly as with a classical diskette.

Dial switch: VCR, OFF, Camera, Memory

  • VCR - function for working with memory and cassette. You can view the recordings or you can transfer the recordings from another devices through cables. When the camcorder is connected to a PC, you can transfer the data to computer.

  • OFF - turning off.

  • Camera - mode for recording onto a cassette. When connected to a PC, it works as a web camera.

  • Memory - function for working with the Memory Stick (recording or viewing photos, video sequences).

Functions and effects

  • NightShot and Super NightShot - two modes for shooting at night that help you to see almost as in the daytime. Super NightShot provides up to 16x more light than in the NightShot mode. For color shooting in dimly lit places there is the Colour Slow Shutter function (does not work in the dark - there you have to use the Super NightShot function).

  • 2x recording modes (SP/LP) - Standard Play/Long Play (High Quality/Low Quality) (e. g. 60 minutes / 90minutes)

  • 3x compression mode for shooting photos: 1. Standard, 2. Fine, 3. Super Fine

  • 2x resolution for shooting photos: 1152x864 (1 Megapixel) and 640x480

  • zoom 10x (digital 120x) (zoom technology means that the focal length is changed so that the object in front of the lens gets closer or further) - Digital zoom is not enabled in the default setup. If you want to use it, you can choose it by setting up maximum zoom to 20x or to 12x it in the menu. The higher zoom, the lower image quality. When connected through USB, the Pinnacle program did not allow to set up the full DV quality.

Notes

  • The package does not contain any cassette, so you have to buy one. You should consider if you want the MiniDV cassette with memory (CM - Casette Memory) or without the memory. The memory enables other functions: Searching of the border between recordings by title, loading subtitles, 'labeling' the cassettes...

  • The MiniDV format gives the camcorder low weight and small size. For less demanding users a camera with Digital8 format having similar parameters and lower price can be more convenient.
