Sdl Mame For Os X

  1. MAME OS X is a native Mac OS X port of the popular MAME emulator. It is designed to take advantage of all the latest Mac OS X technologies, like Core Video and Core Image. Download: MAMEOSX-0.135.dmg (universal binary, requires Mac OS X 10.4.x). View the release notes.
  2. Hi everyone, I haven't run or set up MAME on my Mac in years, and I decided to get back into it in the past week. It's been a bit of a learning curve with moving to SDL MAME (I used MAME OS X previously), and I still seem to have problems setting up ROMs despite following directions I see on Reddit, YouTube, or elsewhere on the internet.
  3. I downloaded MAME OS X and then the Donkey Kong US Set 1 ROM. The download expanded into a folder and so I zipped it and placed the zip file in a folder on my desktop called MAME ROMS. I then opened the preferences for MAME OS X and chose the MAME ROMS folder as the location for the ROM Directory.

Unzip it, and put it in your new MAME folder. It’s just a double-clickable application that will launch MAME. The original source for this is here. I found this after I’d been running MAME from the command line for a while (if you want to do it this way, the easiest is to open a Terminal window, drag the mame64 icon to it, and press enter.

Here are downloads for MAME/MESS on non-Windows platforms including Mac OS X, Linux, and BSD family operating systems.

The following links are for source code, either pre-packaged by MAMEDev or you can simply clone/fork us on Github to follow the team's progress in real-time. Download these if you'd like to learn to develop for MAME/MESS, or if you know how to build the emulator and just want to follow along quickly.

A guide to building MAME/MESS on Mac OS X is available here. An equivalent guide for Linux is available here.

Regularly Updated binaries and packages (usually within a few versions of baseline)

These links are for binaries and/or distribution packages for Mac OS X, the BSD family, and a variety of popular Linux distributions. Download these if you can't or don't wish to build MAME and don't mind waiting for the next release date to see progress. Please Note: In all source release versions starting with 0.162, MAME is a binary which consists the entirety of source (including the former MESS project). As a result, MESS links here will likely only be available up to 0.161 with anything beyond expected to be obtained at the MAME link. For the time being, old MESS can be compiled using 'SUBTARGET=mess' while older MAME (arcade only) can be made with 'SUBTARGET=arcade'. Support for these older styles of binaries will be discontinued in the near future.

Sdl Mame For Os X

MAME is a program that “runs” or emulates a large library of arcade games. You can run MAME using OpenEmu’s Experimental version or use the “official” version which is called SDL MAME for OS X compiled by r0ni aka @sdlmame_osx. In part 1, we’ll go over how to run SDL MAME at the very barest bones.

Note: SDL MAME is not user friendly; it’s not a matter of double-clicking and expecting it to run. It’s actually a commandline program that you run by typing in commands via the Terminal. Also, avoid MAME ports named MacMAME and MAME for OS X. They’re easy to use but they’re old, unsupported and abandoned.

Installation

Install SDL 2

This is a multimedia library that lets MAME display graphics, sounds and read keyboards and game controllers.

  1. Download the SDL 2 Runtime Library for Mac OS X(Direct Link).
  2. Open the DMG and you should see the SDL file.
  3. On your Mac, open the /Library/Frameworks folder:
  4. Go to the Finder.
  5. In the menubar click Go > Go to folder…
  6. Type /Library/Frameworks
  7. Copy the SDL2 from the DMG to this folder

SDLMAME OS X

Setup SDL MAME

  1. Download SDL MAME for OSX. You will want to download the highest version that is 64-bit. (You will also see links to MESS which is a computer and console emulator).
  2. Unzip it and you’ll see a bunch of folders and files.
  3. One of the files extracted is named mame64. This is the SDL MAME program. Usually you would need to open a Terminal, navigate to your MAME folder and type ./mame64 to launch it. To make it easier, download M64 and unzip it into your MAME folder. M64 is a small app that you can double-click to run SDL MAME without opening the Terminal.

This is the M64 app icon.

Game installation

Sdl Mame For Os Xml

Mame
  1. Get games.
  2. Make a roms folder if it doesn’t exist. Put the games (zips) in the roms folder. Do not unpack the zips.
  3. Double-click M64 app we downloaded above in step 3 and you should be able to run the games from the menu.

This is the very featureless rom selection menu. Use the arrow keys and press enter to load a rom.

Once the rom loads this screen shows up. Press left then right to continue.

Yay! Pac-man. Because this is an arcade game you need to insert coins. Do this by pressing 5. Then press 1 to start.

Where to get games?

There are free public domain roms here. Or you can find a torrent on archive.org. The version numbers correspond to the version of MAME. The higher the version number the better - they don’t have to the match your version of MAME but you’ll have a chance of it not running. Version 0.151 is the latest available at the time of this article.

That’s it for part one. Next we’ll make choosing and running games a bit easier and customize your experience.
